Attracting new business needs educational and environmental improvements, NOT corporate welfare

February 3, 2018

The population of Florida and Pasco County, Florida are growing. Bringing more jobs is absolutely necessary. So the question becomes, how do we attract these companies? The good news is that doesn't have to be corporate welfare. The bad news for Florida is that companies are looking for places that value those very things our legislators have been gutting.
Most companies are looking for a strong labor force. This means they are looking for a work force that is young and well educated. When Florida was consistently ranked in the top 10 in the nation in education we could make that sales pitch. Being 29th, however, doesn't give us an edge over other states. Improving our education is critical to attracting new businesses.
This also means that in addition to making sure our educational system improves, we need to make sure people want to stay in the area. This means a lively area with restaurants, parks, cultural attractions, keeping beaches clean, etc. That means that environmental protection is also a critical component in bringing jobs.
Florida's business tax rate is already competitive relative to other states. Giving massive tax breaks is not going to help when we are failing in providing the labor force and environment these companies are looking for. These issues are all connected and by fixing education and the environment, we will be helping job growth.
