Pride Month

Were you aware that June is Pride Month? June was chosen to commemorate the Stonewall riots. These were riots that occurred in June 1969 in response to police raids on establishments that welcomed gay patrons. These riots are often considered a pivotal moment in the modern fight for LGBT rights.

The decision we saw earlier this month coming from the Supreme Court in relation to a baker refusing to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple is a setback. While the decision does not mean that businesses are allowed to discriminate at will, there is no doubt that to a number of people, they will see this decision as freedom to discriminate. What is critical to understand about the decision is that they left open the door for re-evaluation under different circumstances. It's not ideal, but it's still not total defeat.

On June 23rd, St Petersburg will be having their Pride Parade at 7pm. Then on June 24th, there will be the St. Pete Pride Festival from 11am to 5pm. I'll be at the Pasco LGBTQA booth a the Pride Festival for a few hours so make sure to come on out and say hi! You don't have to be a part of the LGBTQ community to participate, you just have to be an ally. Come on out and show your support!

As you may know, discrimination against the LGBT community is what inspired me to run for a state level position. The transgender bathroom bill passed in North Carolina in 2016 motivated me to take action and stand up against those that wish to discriminate against any individual. I will not allow hate to win. Love is stronger than hate and we will prove that when we make it to Tallahassee and finally pass an equal rights amendment that provides full protections for the LGBT community.
